The Philippine Trade and Investment Center in Jakarta informs all stakeholders that the Indonesian government has extended the mandatory halal certification deadline for imported food and beverage products to 17 October 2026, under newly released Government Regulation 42/2024 signed by President Joko Widodo. This two-year extension applies to micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and imported products, while medium and large enterprises with domestically-manufactured products must still meet the original Oct. 17, 2024 deadline.
Beginning October 18, the Halal Product Assurance Agency (BPJPH) and its halal assurance task force will inspect grocery stores to ensure compliance with covered products. All food and beverage products must be halal certified by BPJPH, while products derived from or made with non-halal ingredients must display a non-halal label on the packaging. Failure to comply with the requirement will lead to administrative sanctions.
The business associations viewed the postponement as a positive development, as it will provide industry and the government more time to adjust supply chains, prevent backlogs, and ensure a smoother compliance process. This adds to the flexibility provided by the government on the issue – previously, the government-to-government (G2G) requirement for foreign halal certification recognition was altered to be based on existing international cooperation.
