The Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine of Chinese Taipei has issued quarantine requirements for the importation of certain species of live shrimps to Decapod iridescent virus 1 (DIV1)

The quarantine requirements are established for the importation of the following species of live shrimp, Procambarus clarkii, Cherax quadricarinatus, Macrobrachium nipponense, Macrobrachium rosenbergii and Penaeus vannamei which are regulated objects for preventing the invasion of Decapod iridescent virus 1 (DIV1). Each consignment with a certain amount of packing bags and shrimps shall be provided for sample inspection for DIV1 since 29 May 2020.

The quarantine requirements for importing aforementioned live shrimp species are as follows:

1. For the aforementioned products that are not listed in the import quarantine conditions for animals and animal products of the "Quarantine Requirements for the Importation of Live Crustaceans and Molluscs" and for matters not specified by these requirements, the quarantine requirements for live crustaceans shall be used.

2. Within a period of 14 days immediately preceding exportation, samples shall be collected from the water area or aquaculture facility of origin for testing by a laboratory designated for the DIV1 and the results must be negative; or the DIV1 has not occurred in the exporting source water area or farm for more than two years.

3. On the original animal quarantine certificate that accompanies the products to be imported, there must be an annotation in English or Chinese specifying the test results for DIV1 including the sampling date, number of samples, name of testing laboratory, testing method and results of the testing; or there must be annotation on the certificate stating that the DIV1 has not occurred in the exporting source water area or farm for more than two years.

4. For each import case number where the number is 1000 shrimps or more, a sample testing and inspection according to the methods specified below must be conducted; the products must then be transported to the place designated by the animal quarantine authority for quarantine to wait for the inspection results. During the transport and quarantine period, the products must not come into contact with other animals.

   The sample testing and inspection methods are as follows:

   1. For products with age of 30 days or under (counting from the hatching day): For each water area or aquaculture facility, if the importation is less than 100 bags (each time), products of more than 1,000 shrimps in one bag shall be provided for sample inspection. For importation of more than 100 bags (each time), 2 bags of the products in each bag with over 1,000 shrimps shall be provided for sample inspection.

   2. For products with age over 30 days: At least 30 shrimps of same species adult shrimps that have been mixed with the aforementioned products for 14 days shall be provided as sentinel shrimps for inspection of each source water area or farm; if no samples are prepared, the Local Animal Disease Inspection Authority(LADIA) shall take random samples of at least 30 shrimps for inspection. If the weight of the sampled shrimps over 20g, only three shrimps will be tested.

   3. For the same importer, after the previous importation of the designated quarantine objects have been qualified after passing inspection, to re-import the products from the same source of water area or farm, the random sampling according to the aforementioned could be exempted.

5. For products that comply with all 4 of the aforementioned requirements, an import animal quarantine certificate will be issued; while products which do not comply with any one of the 4 will be returned, culled or destroyed.
